Picking the right Defense is very important. That should go without saying, but it’s one of the most prominent swing positions in Fantasy Football. Some weeks you could play a Defense in your weekly matchup that scores 30 or more points. During other weeks you could play a defense that scores a negative nine. You have to be cautious about the offensive matchups. You likely don’t want to start a defense that is playing the Kansas City Chiefs or New Orleans Saints for example. Streaming defenses usually is the best choice for strategy. However, you could run into a goldmine like the people who picked the Chicago Bears last season.

Ranking all 32 Defenses for Fantasy Football
1.) Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears had the most dominate Defense in the NFL last season. The Bears averaged 11.69 Fantasy points per game. Most of the Bears defenders return from last season. It’s always smart to remember not to overdraft defenses. Its almost been over 20 years since a defense has been the number one defense back to back seasons. It might be a good idea to fade the Bears and draft another defense in the later rounds.
2.) Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens should have the best secondary in the NFL. Shutting down the passing game and getting tons of interceptions. With the Raven slowing down WR’s, that should lead to a lot of coverage sacks for the Ravens. Also, John Harbaugh coaches his players up and limits mistakes. The only primary concern is the loss of C.J. Mosley in the middle of the defense. Other than that big concern the Ravens should be a top-end defense.
3.) Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are one of the few teams that could lead the NFL in sacks. Jadeveon Clowney will likely play the 2019-2020 season under the franchise tag. Motivating Clowney to have his best season yet. Also, J.J. Watt was mostly healthy last season. Having a healthy offseason could recharge his batteries a bit. The significant weakness of this defense is the Cornerback position. It will be necessary for the young guys to step up.
4.) Los Angeles Chargers
When looking over all the defenses in the NFL, it’s hard to find one with fewer wholes then the Los Angeles Chargers. The primary concern with the Chargers defense is health. However, if the Chargers get good health, there’s no reason to think they can’t be the number one defense in Fantasy. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are one of the best pass rush duos in the NFL. With them adding pressure Casey Hayward should be able to make plays and keep his dominance at Cornerback up.
5.) Jacksonville Jaguars
Two seasons ago the Jacksonville Jaguars had the best defense in the NFL. Then this past season the Jaguars didn’t catch all the breaks they needed. The Jaguars still have a ton of elite talent from Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye, Yannick Ngakoue, and Parris Campbell. The Jaguars defense is loaded all over the field. Unfortunately, the Jaguars play the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts a combined four times a year. If the Jaguars can get past those matchups relatively unscathed, they should have no problem finishing as a top-five fantasy defense.
6.) Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams defense arguably has the best football player in the world on it. That player is Aaron Donald, and he seems destined to have another dominant season. The Rams did an excellent job retooling in the draft after losing guys like Ndamukong Suh. With how good the Rams Offense is, that should put added pressure on the opposing Offense allowing the Rams defense to capitalize. Depth could be a concern for the Rams, but as long as Donald is healthy, the Rams should be ok.
7.) Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are a defense that’s getting older but still has a ton of talent. Danielle Hunter is one of the best young pass rushers on the rise. Hunter can be the Vikings best defender, and that’s saying something when you think about the big names on this defense. Xavier Rhodes and Harrison Smith are still very valuable to the Vikings secondary. It wouldn’t be shocking at all if the Vikings defense puts together a dominant Fantasy season.
8.) New Orleans Saints
The Saints Offense should put the Saints Defense in good positions. With Drew Brees rarely turning the ball over, the Saints defense should start with good field position on most defensive drives. Cameron Jordan has been a solid Defensive End for quite some time now. If the rest of the former first-round picks on the Saints defensive line (Sheldon Rankins, Malcolm Brown, and Marcus Davenport) can continue to develop, this could be an elite unit on a team with real Superbowl asperations.
9.) New England Patriots
Bill Belichek continues to put together solid defenses. Even in a perceived down year last season, the Patriots had a top-five Fantasy defense. Stephon Gillmore will continue to be the guy in the Patriots secondary, locking down numerous WR’s last season. The loss of Trey Flowers could be difficult to replace, but Micheal Bennett could do a serviceable job.
10.) Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the most disappointing defenses this past season. The Eagles were drafted as a top-five defense but finished in the bottom ten in Fantasy points. With the recent additions on the Eagles defense, they should be a candidate for a bounce-back season. Fletcher Cox and Malik Jackson should be one of the best Defensive Tackle Combinations. Expect the Eagles to bring the heat when it comes to getting to the Quarterback.
11.) Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills defense was put in a lot of bad situations last season. Especially early in the season when Nathan Peterman started some games. With all the bad situations the Bills defense was put in, they still managed to be serviceable. Tremaine Edmunds and Tre’Davious White are two of the best young defenders in the league. The Bills defense also has some established veterans like Jerry Hughes and Lorenzo Alexander. Don’t be surprised if the Bills defense leads them to a .500 record or better.
12.) Seattle Seahawks
Pete Carroll like Bill Belichick continues to put solid defenses on the field. In what was expected to be a rebuilding season, the Seattle Seahawks still managed to finish ninth in total D/ST Fantasy points. Bobby Wagner has established himself as one of the best defenders in the NFL. The Seahawks will need to pay Wagner soon, he’s always been the heart and soul of the Seahawks defense, even when they had the Legion of Boom.
